Description: This painting represents Deepankara Buddha. According to Tripitaka, Deepankara is the fourth Samyak Sambuddha. In the previous life, Shakyamuni Buddha was a practitioner named “Sumedh”. Once he paid deep homage to the Deepankara and asked Buddha that he also wants to be a Samyak Sambuddha in future, then Deepankara gave the blessings to Sumedh and he became Samyak Sambuddha as Shakyamuni Buddha in Lumbini about 2600 years back. That’s why in Newar Buddhism, Deepankara Buddha is highly profound Buddha.

On the back ground of this painting, there are two wooden pillars with Newari motifs and image of two dragons on the both sides. It looks like Buddha statute kept in the Old Newari Mahavihar (Old Newari Monasteries)

The Crown (Mukha) is so beautifully designed with Newari style (Ghaayan Butta). It includes the symbol of five celestial Buddhas with precious stones. The crown is fully gold glided. On the top of the crown, silver leaves (Kikipa) are installed. At lower part of crown, there is an image of “Cheppu”. Face looks so peaceful and calm. Ear rings with meticulous engravings, embedded with red coral in the center look more attractive.

Choker (Kanthi Mala) is one of the most significant ornaments used in the Paubha Paintings. It is embedded with image of the Garuda (King of Birds) in the middle. Also it is embellished with a Tayo and five nagas. Silver chain is painted. Different colours like red, green, blue and orange are used in the dress of Buddha.

His right hand is in Abhaya Mudra (Gestures of Blessings and Protection), while the left hand hangs against the folds of the monastic garment.
